How to Ship a Car to Another State: A Booking Checklist

An open car carrier transporting several vehicles along a highway.

To ship a car to another state, start with the route, vehicle condition and dates you can work with. Then compare written quotes, confirm who will transport the vehicle, and prepare for inspection at pickup and delivery. This checklist helps you collect those details before booking.

Dispatch Dudes arranges vehicle transport as a broker. The assigned motor carrier supplies the truck and moves your car. For the service overview and a route quote, see our interstate and cross-country car shipping service.

1. Collect your shipment details

A useful quote needs more than the two states. Have the pickup and delivery ZIP codes, vehicle year, make and model, running condition, preferred pickup window and receiving contact ready.

For a specific example, our Florida-to-New-York planning checklist shows how to organize the locations, vehicle details and handoff contacts for that route.

  • Vehicle condition: describe whether it starts, rolls, steers and brakes. Disclose leaks, missing parts, low clearance or modifications that affect loading.
  • Dates: separate your preferred pickup window from a fixed deadline, such as a flight, lease ending or dealership release. Ask what is feasible before relying on an exact day.
  • Address access: mention narrow streets, gated communities, overhead clearance or parking restrictions. Agree on a safe nearby handoff if a full-size carrier cannot reach the address.
  • Release and receiving: confirm who can hand over the keys and who will inspect and receive the car. Check any dealer, auction or lender requirements that apply to your vehicle.

If the car does not run, describe its condition before booking. Our non-running car shipping page explains the loading questions to discuss.

2. Choose the transport equipment

Open car transport carries the vehicle on an uncovered trailer. Enclosed car transport uses a covered trailer. Compare the options for your vehicle’s condition, finish, clearance, route and budget rather than treating one method as right for every car.

For a classic, exotic or low-clearance vehicle, ask about the actual trailer and loading setup. A covered trailer alone does not establish that its ramps, liftgate or loading angle fit your car. Record any required equipment in the shipment details before a carrier is assigned.

3. Compare the same shipment in writing

Compare quotes using the same route, vehicle condition, trailer type, pickup window and access requirements. A lower number is difficult to evaluate when another quote includes different equipment or a different timing request.

  • Is this a planning estimate or a confirmed price for the agreed shipment?
  • What could change the amount, and how would you be told?
  • When is each payment due, and who receives it?
  • What are the cancellation and refund terms?
  • What happens if no suitable carrier is available for the requested window?

There is no single price that fits every interstate move. The car shipping cost guide covers the factors to compare. To discuss the actual route and vehicle, use the route quote form. Submitting a request does not itself confirm a carrier or pickup date.

4. Verify the broker and assigned carrier

Know which company is arranging the shipment and which company will physically carry the car. FMCSA’s automobile transport consumer advisory explains this distinction. Its authority lookup guidance directs consumers to the Licensing and Insurance system.

Before pickup, obtain the assigned carrier’s name, identifying numbers and contact information. Review the applicable cargo-policy information for your shipment, including limits, exclusions, deductibles and reporting instructions. A broker’s bond and a carrier’s cargo policy serve different purposes; neither should be presented as a blanket promise that every possible loss is covered.

Dispatch Dudes’ customer-facing address is 4699 N Federal Hwy #110, Pompano Beach, FL 33064. Our credentials page sets out the published broker details and insurance explanation. Check the actual carrier assigned to your vehicle as well.

5. Prepare for pickup

  • Confirm the meeting location, contact numbers and pickup window with the assigned carrier.
  • Follow that carrier’s instructions for keys, fuel, alarms and personal belongings. Ask which items are permitted and which are covered before leaving anything in the vehicle.
  • Photograph the vehicle and record existing condition concerns while completing the pickup inspection.
  • Review the Bill of Lading and keep a copy of the pickup condition record.
  • Keep the written quote, payment terms and carrier contacts together so a receiving representative can find them.

Pickup scheduling and road transit are separate stages. Ask when the next update will arrive and whom to contact if plans change. Do not interpret an expedited request or an initial estimate as a guaranteed arrival date.

6. Inspect the vehicle at delivery

Have the receiving person compare the car with the pickup photos and condition record before completing the delivery paperwork. If a concern is found, document it on the delivery record, take photos, and follow the assigned carrier’s reporting instructions promptly. Keep the records and contact the carrier and coordinating broker through their stated channels.

Questions to answer before shipping across state lines

Can a transport truck collect the car from my home?

That depends on safe, legal access at the address. Confirm the location before assignment and agree on another nearby handoff if the truck cannot reach it.

How much will my interstate shipment cost?

Ask for a quote using your actual ZIP codes, vehicle, equipment needs and date window. Compare the written scope and payment terms instead of applying a generic national price to your move.

What if I cannot attend pickup or delivery?

Tell the broker and carrier in advance. Confirm their requirements for an authorized representative, inspection, keys and paperwork.

Can I leave personal belongings in the car?

Ask the assigned carrier about its written allowance, restrictions and coverage. Permission to leave an item in the vehicle does not automatically mean that item is insured.

Ready to price your actual shipment?
